I complained recently about the Cat Who books by Lillian Jackson Braun: "Mildly entertaining and highly irritating," was my verdict.
But I was a bit puzzled. I'd read several of the books years ago, and wondered why I hadn't noticed then just how annoying they were. I've figured it out now. Picking up the series again after all those years, I got a bad apple. The Cat Who Came to Breakfast sounds like Braun went away on an extended European tour and left instructions for her secretary to finish her book: "Just follow my outline and copy my style from my other books, and you'll do fine."
Since then, I've read The Cat Who Saw Stars and The Cat Who Lived High. They're the real thing, highly entertaining and only mildly irritating.
